In the PC and Mac versions of the game, Minecraft character Skins change the look of 'Steve', your character.
The Skins can be found at Minecraft-related websites such as www.minecraftskins.com, or you could download the minecraft explorer app with the skin editor, but it isn't free.

The two default player skins are known as Steve (a name suggested by Notch as a joke and confirmed on the 'Profile' page near the section that allows you to change your skins) and Alex, with all unchanged skins being split between the two default skins.
Installing a Minecraft Skin [edit]
To install a new skin, simply click your selected skin and click 'Upload to minecraft.net.' You will need to sign into your minecraft.net account to complete the process.
Xbox 360 skins [edit]
The Xbox 360 version of Minecraft also has available skins presented in downloadable packs of 45 skins that cost 160 MSP (2.00$) each. Some of these packs are themed after certain holidays like Christmas or Holloween (Holloween skin pack is no longer available). Simply go into the Xbox games market place and under game add-ons search, type in Minecraft. A list of MInecraft skin packs will show up for you to purchase.
